Parent Focus Group: Colorado Immunization Personal Belief Exemption Policy
Colorado Parents & Guardians—We Want to Hear From You!
Colorado has seen a drastic increase in vaccine-preventable illnesses and has one of the highest personal exemption rates in the country. From 2010-2011, 5.7% of Colorado kindergarteners were not fully vaccinated upon school entry as a result of personal belief exemptions (PBEs). This equates to almost 4,000 children entering schools each year who are unimmunized against one or more vaccine preventable diseases.
The Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition and the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment – Immunization Section, in partnership with The Keystone Center, a non-profit, neutral facilitator, is seeking your participation in a stakeholder engagement process. Over the next few months, The Keystone Center is engaging stakeholders from a variety of sectors through focus groups and facilitated meetings to hear your opinions on and experiences with Colorado’s personal belief exemption policies and practices. This effort will build a greater understanding of the state’s current immunization landscape and the impacts of Colorado’s personal belief exemption policy on preventing illness and keeping Colorado’s kids healthy.
As a parent and guardian who serve a critical role in protecting your child’s health, we want to hear from you at this important focus group meeting which will center on key questions such as:
- What are your thoughts and opinions regarding Colorado’s current Personal Belief Exemption Policy for Immunizations?
- How does the current Personal Belief Exemption Policy for Immunizations affect you and your family?
- If you could make changes to Colorado’s Personal Belief Exemption Policy for Immunizations, what would they be?
The following focus group meeting is tailored to parents and guardians and will inform a larger effort to develop recommendations for decision-makers and partners involved in the state’s Personal Belief Exemption Policy. Your participation in this focus group could have a large impact on the outcomes of this stakeholder engagement process and help to shape the state’s PBE policy.
