Presenter: Dr. Robert Brayden

Dr. Robert Brayden is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He received his degree in medicine from St. Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Brayden was a resident in pediatrics at the University of Colorado, and he served as Chief Resident at Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. He was also a post-doctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University in general and behavioral pediatrics and remained on the Vanderbilt University Department of Pediatrics faculty for five years.

Dr. Brayden joined the University of Colorado Pediatrics faculty in 1994. He has conducted clinical service and research projects in immunization and preventive services delivery while in Colorado. Dr. Brayden has taught general pediatrics in the outpatient clinic at The Children’s Hospital in Denver, and he has been a consultant to the Cleft Lip/Cleft Palate Team.

Dr. Brayden is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He currently serves as the Board President for the Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition and the Co-Chair of the Vaccine Advisory Committee for Colorado along with Lieutenant Governor Barbara O’Brien. Dr. Brayden is also the co-editor of The Pediatric Advisor, an electronic software program of patient handouts, and the principal investigator or sub-investigator on three different research projects at The Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Brayden loves teaching, and he is fortunate enough to be able to deliver his Immunization Update presentation to providers across the state. The objective of his presentation is to review the epidemiology of vaccine-preventable diseases and update recent vaccination changes including: hepatitis A, meningococcal conjugate vaccine, influenza, and Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine. The target audience includes those involved in the process of vaccination: primary pediatric health care providers, nurses and medical assistants. Dr. Brayden is able to give his presentation in traditional face-to-face settings (across the state of Colorado) and web-conference settings. To learn more about this educational opportunity, other presentation topics, or to schedule a speaking opportunity for Dr. Brayden with your organization, please contact Heather.

Seminar: An Epidemiologic Study of Parental Vaccine Refusal: Failure to Fully Immunize Children and the Risk of Pertussis Infection

Presenter: Jason Glanz, PhD

Routine childhood immunization in the United States has been a tremendous success. Over the last five decades, illnesses such as polio, measles, mumps, rubella, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and smallpox have been reduced by 99 to 100%. Now that these diseases have disappeared from the public eye, however, parental concern has shifted from disease transmission to vaccine safety. More and more parents are beginning to believe that the risks of routine childhood immunizations outweigh the benefits. Examples of common parental concerns include: vaccines “overload” the immune system, vaccinations cause chronic illnesses, vaccines are not effective, the risks of vaccine-preventable diseases are low, and children receive more shots than are good for them. Many of these concerned parents refuse some or all immunizations for their children. While this vaccine-refusing population represents a relatively small proportion of the overall population, the number of parents who refuse childhood immunizations has doubled over the last decade.

The objective of this presentation is to describe vaccine refusal in the United States. The first half of the presentation focuses on the legal, social and ethical issues surrounding mandatory immunization laws, as well as a description of the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs of both parents and providers about immunizations. The second half of the talk describes an epidemiologic study that examines the risk of pertussis infection in children of parents who refuse immunizations. The target audience includes providers, parents, health educators, and researchers who are interested in immunization policy and public health.

Dr. Jason Glanz is a Research Investigator at the Institute for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente Colorado and Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center. Dr. Glanz received a B.S. in Biology from Boston University and a M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Massachusetts. He then earned his PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Colorado. Before his work with Kaiser Permanente Colorado, Dr. Glanz served as a biostatistician in the Preventive Medicine and Biometrics, Behavioral Sciences, and Pharmacology departments at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He then spent five years as Senior Analyst/Epidemiologist for the Institute of Health Research at Kaiser Permanente Colorado. Dr. Glanz is able to give his presentation in traditional face-to-face settings (in the Denver metro area) and web-conference settings. To learn more about this educational opportunity or to schedule a speaking opportunity for Dr. Glanz with your organization, please contact Heather.
