Vaccines remain one of the landmark achievements of public health in the United States and Colorado, completely eliminating diseases like polio and smallpox and reducing by >99% many other potentially fatal infectious diseases. Without vaccines, we would expect more than 70,000 vaccine-preventable disease cases in Colorado each year. In spite of concern with adverse side effects perpetuated by a few in the lay press and on the internet, vaccines, highlighted by recent success in Colorado with the chickenpox and pneumococcal vaccines, have proven to be very effective and extremely safe.
The following annual Vaccine-Preventable Diseases of Colorado's Children Reports are a summary of the past year's vaccination rates versus prevalence of vaccine-preventable diseases. These reports analyze data but also offer solutions to maintain these rates and offer ideas to increase the rates.
