CCIC October Provider Education: Management of Chronic Hepatitis B Infection and Perinatal Transmission Prevention: An Overview of Current Strategies

In this presentation, Dr. Alvaro Martinez-Camacho, MD, FACP, will provide an overview of chronic hepatitis B epidemiology, define the clinical phases of chronic HBV infection and appropriate care for these patients, including a review of current available antivirals. Dr. Martinez will also review strategies to reduce transmission of the virus, including management during pregnancy and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HBV. This educational seminar is being presented for physicians, nurses, healthcare providers, students, and stakeholders interested in chronic disease management, maternal and perinatal health, immunization, and public health.
Following this seminar, participants should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology of chronic HBV infection.
- Discuss management of patients who are chronically infected with HBV, including an overview of the four stages of chronic infection.
- Review current first-line antiviral therapies.
- Describe management of mothers-to-be to prevent vertical transmission of HBV, including immunization recommendations for infants and antiviral usage for mothers.

Alvaro Martinez-Camacho, MD, FACP, is a board-certified gastroenterologist at Denver Health and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.
