CIIS Expansion
The Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS) is a population‐based, computerized registry system managed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. This voluntary system collects and consolidates confidential electronic patient information from immunization providers, health plans and schools on vaccines received by individuals, allowing for an up‐to‐date and accurate immunization record.
CCIC, in partnership with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Children’s Hospital Colorado, hosted a state leadership stakeholder engagement and strategic planning process to make recommendations on enhancing the capacity and functionality of the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS). The stakeholder process lasted from October 2013 to March 2014.
These meetings provided an opportunity to share information and make recommendations on enhancing CIIS so that it may function to its highest technical, operational and programmatic standard and capacity with the goal of ultimately increasing immunization rates for vaccine preventable illnesses and other possible improved health outcomes. Examples of issues discussed and considered include: participation of non‐clinical sites such as early childhood centers, schools districts and WIC sites; the collection of additional child health data indicators, such as newborn genetic and hearing screening and BMI; and opportunities and challenges in interoperability with electronic health records (EHR) and health information exchanges (HIE).
Funding for this effort comes from grants awarded to CCIC from the Colorado Health Foundation, the COPIC Medical Foundation and the Caring for Colorado Foundation. CCIC hired Health Management Associates, an independent, national research and consulting firm, to facilitate the process and produce the visioning document which includes a set of prioritized recommendations to be shared with decision makers, funders and others.
Please see below for the final stakeholder report, as well as past meeting materials. Please feel free to distribute the report and recommendations widely to your colleagues and professional organizations.
