CCIC Provider Education: Mumps Clinical Review and Outbreak Update
This presentation was particularly timely in light of the concurrent Denver metro area mumps outbreak. Once thought to be a disease of the past, mumps has made a comeback with the greatest number of cases seen in the last 10 years. Amanda provided a clinical overview of mumps, and she discussed the recent outbreaks and obstacles faced by the public health community in the climate of these outbreaks.
This presentation:
- Provided a historic perspective on mumps including outbreak trends pre and post vaccination
- Described the epidemiology and burden of disease
- Reviewed the clinical manifestation of mumps and diagnostic testing tools
- Summarized previous mumps outbreaks, including vaccine effectiveness, current vaccine schedule and recommendations
