CCIC Provider Education: Vaccine Safety and Adverse Events

CCIC Provider Education: Vaccine Safety and Adverse Events

Dec 13 2016

The topic of vaccine safety and adverse events is extremely important in today's climate. Understanding the benefits and risks of vaccination, as well as the systems in place to ensure safety, enables those working directly with families to strengthen confidence around vaccination and build relationships. Dr. Asturias discussed how vaccine safety is measured, how causality is assessed, and the significance of the provider's role in discussing vaccination with families.

This presentation:

  • Defined adverse events following immunization
  • Discussed the systems in place to monitor vaccine safety, including the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, Vaccine Safety Data Link, CISA, and the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program
  • Reviewed how causality is assessed in determining whether a possible adverse event is related or not related to a vaccine
  • Summarized the vaccine factors affecting the risk of adverse events
  • Reviewed the role of the provider, including how to discuss vaccine safety and address common fears with parents
  • Reviewed specific cases of adverse events following immunization
