National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is an annual observance held each August to highlight the importance of vaccination across the lifespan. During NIAM 2018, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) will host a weekly webinar at 12:00 PM ET on each Tuesday in August.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can result in severe, sometimes permanent, complications including pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, and death. The virus spreads easily by contact with an infected person through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms may include rash, cough, runny nose, eye irritation, and fever. Measles was declared eliminated from the US in 2000 thanks to a highly effective vaccination program; however, each year, measles is brought into the US by unvaccinated travelers who get measles while they are in other countries. Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk.
Join NFID Medical Director, William Schaffner, MD and NFID Vice President Patricia A. Stinchfield, RN, MS, CPNP, CIC, Senior Director, Infection Prevention and Control, Children’s Minnesota, for an update on measles epidemiology and lessons learned from a recent measles outbreak in the US.
