2012 Sure Shot (Regional) - Opal Stalker

Opal Stalker currently serves as the Public Health Supervisor at Montezuma County Public Health Dept (MCPHD) in Cortez and the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS) Field Coordinator for the SW Region.

In her 40+ years of nursing, Opal has been employed throughout Colorado in various aspects of healthcare, including hospitals, nursing homes, physician’s offices, and public health. For the past 16 years, she has been Immunization/Communicable Disease Coordinator/PHN at MCPHD.

After receiving a grant from CCIC in 2000, Opal served as Immunization (IZ) Specialist in the Montezuma County region. The purpose of the grant was to support efforts to increase IZ rates in Colorado through the implementation of nationally recognized “best practices.” Collaboration with providers and community-based organizations began and continues! One of the great collaboration efforts resulted in at least 95 percent of Montezuma County providers utilizing the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS) in its early stage. Because of this adoption, MCPHD and Montezuma-Cortez School District were accepted for a pilot project when CIIS was ready to expand usage to schools.

Opal has continued to organize many successful immunization activities, build rapport with providers and community members, offer support and education while performing VFC site visits and participate in community events as a Kiwanis member. She thoroughly enjoys her work at MCPHD, the SW region, collaboration from professionals throughout the state and look forward to many more great experiences and opportunities to keep children and families healthy.
