2018 Sure Shot (Regional) - Jon and Lisa Krizman
Jon and Lisa Krizman
Founders, Sierra's Race Against Meninigitis
Jon and Lisa lost their daughter, Sierra, to meningococcal meningitis on April 10, 2007 at the age of 20. Sierra was working her way through college at the University of Northern Colorado to fulfill her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. At the time, the Krizman family was not aware of this fatal disease, or of the vaccine that could have prevented it, until it was too late.
“Our lives from that day forward would never be the same. Sierra was everything good in this world, never afraid to share her outlook on life with anyone and everyone. She was a huge piece of our family’s life, a part that could never be replaced. Sierra’s spirit lives on in our lives and those of our son, Ty, our daughter, Sherrell, her husband, Dan, and their children, Makenna and Kyer. Sierra is our guide as we do everything we can to prevent this from happening to others.”
The Krizmans created Sierra’s Race Against Meningitis to educate and inform local Colorado parents about vaccine-preventable meningococcal meningitis. Over the years, Sierra’s Race Against Meningitis has become an experience that impacts lives, becoming one of the largest 5Ks in Colorado. The 1,500+ participants are not just running and walking to save lives, but also to have the opportunity to hear the personal story of a guest speaker and meningitis survivor who lives with multiple physical impairments.
The 2018 5K run/walk and Kid’s Fun Run will be held June 16 at Foundations Church in Loveland. All of the proceeds generated by Sierra’s Race are used to promote meningitis awareness and provide free vaccinations for anyone 2-55 years of age. It’s the Krizmans' hope that through sponsorships and donations, Sierra’s Race Against Meningitis can continue to provide awareness throughout Colorado about meningitis and the vaccine that prevents it. In the past 10 years, proceeds from Sierra’s Race have helped sponsor more than $480,000 in free vaccinations at various clinics where over 5,800 people have received their life-saving meningitis vaccine.
"Each year since 2007, Jon and Lisa Krizman provide free vaccines at Sierra's Race and buy vaccines for the University of Northern Colorado so that students can get the vaccine for free. They have held numerous clinics throughout northern Colorado and work tirelessly all year long, planning and raising donations so that the race is a success and they can purchase more vaccines. Their love for their daughter is apparent in all they do to try and prevent just one other family from going through what they did. They are definitely "Sure Shots" in our community and we are so thankful for all they do to protect our families."
