AURORA – The Colorado Children’s Immunization Coalition (CCIC) has announced its 2018 S.O.U.P! (Shots Offer Unrivaled Protection) event award winners during National Infant Immunization Week (April 21-28). Stephen Berman, MD, and Elaine Gantz Berman, MSPH, will receive the organization’s highest distinction, the Big Shots of the Year award.
“The CCIC Board of Directors is pleased to recognize Dr. Berman and Ms. Gantz Berman for their many contributions and decades of commitment to improving the lives of children throughout Colorado,” said CCIC Executive Director Stephanie Wasserman.
Stephen Berman, MD, FAAP, is a Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and School of Public Health, he holds an endowed chair in Academic General Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado, and is director of the Center for Global Health at the Colorado School of Public Health. Dr. Berman has worked at Children's Hospital Colorado caring for children who have special health care needs for the past 45 years. He is the former president of the American Academy of Pediatrics and was a founding board member of the Colorado Children’s Campaign and Bight by Three. Dr. Berman has also served as special adviser to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the United States Agency for International Development and the National Academy of Sciences Board of Science and Technology in Developing Countries (BOSTID). Additionally, Dr. Berman has authored four editions of the textbook entitled Pediatric Decision Making and published a book on child advocacy and health policy entitled Getting it Right for Children: Stories of Pediatric Care and Advocacy. He is an editor of Global Child Health Advocacy: On the front lines as well as a manual titled Pediatric Emergencies in Disasters.
Elaine Gantz Berman, MSPH, serves on the Metropolitan State University (MSU) Board of Trustees, is chair of the Academic and Student Affairs Committee at MSU, and is the MSU Denver Representative to the Auraria Board of Directors. She served from 2007-2015 on the Colorado State Board of Education and previously served for eight years on the Denver Board of Education, including four years as its president. Prior to serving in elected office, Ms. Gantz Berman worked for 18 years as a program officer at the Denver-based Piton Foundation, focusing on a wide spectrum of children's issues including adoption, child advocacy, child poverty, teen pregnancy, child abuse and neglect, child health, and public education. She helped to found the Colorado Children's Campaign, the Adoption Exchange, the Colorado Education Initiative, and the Colorado Non-Profit Development Center.
CCIC also will honor three others with the 2018 Sure Shot awards: Katherine Chichester, RN, nurse manager of Community Based Programs at Denver Health, and Jon and Lisa Krizman, who founded Sierra's Race Against Meningitis in 2007 after they lost their 20-year-old daughter to meningococcal meningitis.
The awards will be presented at the nonprofit’s 10th S.O.U.P! fundraising event Oct. 18 at the McNichols Civic Center Building in Denver.
